Earth Myths

In Greek mythology, Scorpio is always linked with Orion. Several versions of his myth exist but all of them end with Scorpio killing the Hunter. In one version, Orion boasts to Artemis about his ability to kill every creature on Earth. The goddess rewards his pride with a giant scorpion. In another version, Orion earns Apollo’s ire for gaining his twin sister’s favor. In this version, Orion still hunts in the sky every winter but flees in the summer when the scorpion comes.

In Babylonia, the constellation was paired with Libra, naming the scales his “claws”. Scorpio’s tale is also known in Hawaii as the Fishhook of the demigod Maui.
