A Brief History of Constellations
There are 88 recognized constellations in the human sky today. 48 were discovered by ancient societies and officially categorized by Ptolemy in the 2nd century CE. The other 40 were added by European explorers in the 1500s and 1600s. In 1922 the IAU met and created an official outline of the acknowledged 88.
There are myths from many cultures associated with the constellations and their stars. Constellations were not only used as one of the earliest navigation tools for mankind, but also one of the earliest inspirations for storytelling.
It is our intent to feature each of the 88 constellations in this series. We are doing our best to encapsulate the human myths and histories associated with each while still taking some creative liberty.
